Procter & Gamble said Friday it would buy Sara Lee's Ambi Pur air freshener business and several toilet-care products for $470 million.
P&G said Ambi Pur would complement its air care portfolio in Europe and Asia, anchored by its Febreze brand. Under Sara Lee, Ambi Pur generated the bulk of its sales in Western Europe, particularly the U.K.
I especially favour such big corporations like P&G because they really highlights the importance of the comptability between its acquisition and its primary operations. It will be disastrous if the two operations clash with one another as much efforts will have to be used to make sure they fit in. And at the end of the day, lots of money will be wasted in trying to force the acquisition and its primary business together.
The deal is expected to lift P&G's global market share in the air care market to 18%, from 11%, according to Jefferies & Co. analyst Douglas Lane. The global air freshener market is worth $8 billion at retail and growing in the mid-single digits, he said.
