The Social Network

Recently, I just started to watch the Social Network.

I knew I had to because it was nominated for many awards at the Oscars and I've heard raving reviews about it for so many months already. Initially my friends told me that it was somewhat like a documentary and that somewhat turned me off because I really hate documentaries.

But this was no where near documentaries, it was exciting and absolutely my type of movie. I actually see a resemblance between this movie and the one called "Wall Street: Money never sleeps".

Both are incandescent masterpieces. The editing is flawless and the story flows so fluently despite it being filled with jumping scenes. Its almost like you understand more and more about it as the movie jump from the past to the present and back to the past again. You somehow are able to grasp the content so much better. How intriguing.

Basically in the movie, as we all know Mark Zuckerberg was portrayed as an asshole but at the end of the movie, a lawyer told him, "You are not an asshole Mark. You are just trying so hard to be one."

I think this is quite relevant in our society today. Many people are actually not assholes but because of the culture and the pop music, people think that its cool to be assholes.

When you are one, you gain all the attention and even at some point in time, people actually look up to you. They think you are cool. They like jerks.

But at the end of the day, you don't feel like that's you at all. But you don't know how to be yourself again after acting like an asshole for some long.

Another particularly interesting point raised in the movie was how best friends started to turn against each other.

The main characters were Eduardo and Mark. Eduardo was named the CFO of Facebook and at the same time, both of them who were geeks wanted to enter "The Finals Club". Basically, its a club of prestige. Once you get in, you are like a god basically, held in high esteem by the rest. Of course, its not easy to get in.

When Eduardo got in for the first round of interview, Mark told him that its probably a diversity thing. You know? The club wants to have many nationalities in it just for formality sake.

Then Eduardo got through the second round and this time round, Mark told him that he should be happy to make it this far and not be upset if its the end of the road for him.

And later on, Eduardo got admitted into the Finals Club and Mark, being jealous of his friend's achievement, betrayed him by tricking him to sign a document that forces him to dilute his stakes in the company from 30% to a mere 0.03%.

But of course in the end, Mark really regretted what he did and was truly remorseful.

Point being, its inevitable that you will be jealous of your friends' achievements, even the smallest one. In actual fact, we all are jealous. But its important to be aware of these jealousy and not let them get the better of you.

Overall, an excellent movie. Definitely worthy of the multitude of nominations it has received thus far!
