Brain power
Recently, I have just attended a Psychology lecture at NUS.
It was quite amazing. I vividly remembered a point where Asst. Prof Maria mentioned.
She showed us a video, where there's a man whose left arm is amputated and miraculously, he can actually feel his "phantom" left arm when someone touches his left cheek. Apparently, the nervous system of the left cheek has overlapped over to the nervous system controlling the "left arm".
Amazing isn't it?
Well let me introduce to you something called the reticular activating system (RAS) today.
You are what you think. Its power lies in the fact that the subconscious accepts all you feed it as reality.
It CANNOT distinguish between a real perception and an imaginary one.
So, you should FAKE it till you make it.
If you are demoralised or act depressed on purpose, you will really become depressed because your brain is not able to differentiate between what's real and what's not.
An example would be that when you are studying, you rest your head on your palm. Soon you will feel bored and you will naturally become unproductive.
It sort through the clutter and carefully select and guide you to the reality that is consistent with your thoughts.
Hence, if you are thinking, "I am a successful businessman." Your brain will guide you towards that goal. But you must be consistent in thought. If there is a slight diversion along the way, it will change its course for sure!
It screens out everything that won't interest you and then waking you up to something that will interest you.
That is why you might feel that you are constantly exposed to something, for example, a number, a colour, a statement or even a person. That's mainly because you are constantly thinking about it and thus, you only took noticed of that particular thing. In actual fact, they are appearing on the same frequency as other things. Its just that you are biased towards it.
Pretty amazing right?
So, start thinking positive and have absolute positive statements about yourself because your brain is de facto "stupid", as it cannot tell between what's real and what's fake!

Values: Taught or Assimilated ?
Values are something special indeed.
Every company have their own set of value systems and belief. There is no point in trying to force new values in them as the employees are already worshiping them. Do remember that values inculcating is a long consistent process (up to years).
However, a few days back, one of my friends, Samuel told me that the CEO of the company XXX went into every single department, questioning her staffs about the values of the company.
I thought that was really appalling. I mean, it seems that she's almost doing it for the sake of doing it. You don't question your employees about the values. So what if they can answer you?
Actions speak louder than words. You have to set a perfect example on your own. See how the operations are going accordingly.
For instance, if you have a value, determination. You can always find out, out of the many successful projects, what percentage of them were actually rejected before. This will give you an indicator of how courageous your staff are, how determined they are even after they are rejected, to bring the project they believed in to success.
You don't go around asking people to elaborate on the value determination. They can easily give you the most idealistic answer but these are all mere words, nothing more than that. We can bullshit all the way and you can't do anything about it.
Hence, I believe that for values to be entrenched into the employees. It has to be via the practical means. It is by no means easy and any anomalies will naturally obliterate the employees' beliefs in the value system. Nonetheless, consistency and pigheaded discipline will enable the company to succeed as a whole.
Sincerity will touch the employees. It will take time for time will tell. Employees are constantly scrutinizing the management's actions. Once they do something against the value system, it will collapse, immediately.

The way values are set and said is of paramount importance.
1. Articulation of Values
2. Content of Values
3. The way they are put across.
Point 1,2, and 3 are the most important ways when it comes to making sure that the company's values are properly entrenched into the employees.
They bring across the ideas of the management to the lower levels. These ideas are however, fragile and vulnerable, thus they have to be diffused via softer means.
What do we mean by softer means you might ask.
Basically, it means that we have to put idea and values across via actions, not just merely through the usage of words. Even so, most employees are long cynical and skeptical of the way managers put across ideas for they know that it is only momentarily.
After a while, their enthusiasm will soon run out and it will be back to the old authoritarian system where the employees have no say. That is when the value system starts to backfire.
Hence, consistency in actions plays a pivotal role. It takes pigheaded discipline and immense understanding to be successful in the planting of the values into the employees.
There are some very famous examples where companies have successfully implanted the values into the employees.
We have Frito-Lay with their 99% service level, Johnson & Johnson with their quality stories that are passed down from posterities to posterities, and of course the innovation stories from 3M, etc.
Values are definitely not easy to inculcate in the employees but so long as both parties are mutually willing to give it a shot. Anything can be done!

Why buy H.P even after its scandal?
H.P.'s ex-CEO Mark Kurd has already be fired from the company.
According to inside sources, Hurd cut the research and development budget, sowed mistrust and was actually destructive to H-P in the eyes of some company leaders.
Contrary to popular belief, Mark Kurd was not the primary force behind HP's success.
In fact, Cathie Lesjak, the chief financial officer turned interim CEO, is considered one of the best at lean-and-mean cost cutting and is a big reason Hewlett-Packard weathered the recession so well. She was, essentially, the force behind Hurd's success on the bottom line and for very respectable margins
Also, H-P has economies of scale to keep costs down. For three years in a row, H-P has been in first place globally for "information technology," including PCs, printers, computers servers and software. It is the largest tech company in the world by revenue.
The company has been buying storage and networking companies that allow it to attract business from clients with more complex IT needs.
H.P. is definitely moving in the right direction now.
Networking and data storage business is definitely the new "in" because of the uprising cloud computing business where people exchange data over a shared network instead of using their own private network now.
It is much more convenient to tap the plethora of information available everywhere these days. It facilitates the flow of information more smoothly and enable proper storage in their respective databases for future uses. Examples of uses will be for marketing purposes and the spotting of pivotal trends when it comes to the analysis of the multitude of psychological needs along with physiological needs.
Of course, companies like Dell and IBM have also noticed this salient trend and are, too, moving in at lightning speed. Everyone is making their respective investments in the small companies that they deemed are useful in this cloud computing age.
While everyone is still panicking amidst the confusion of Kurd's departure, it is definitely the apposite time to invest in HP considering that it is undervalued right now.
In the long run, it will definitely prove to be a worthy buy.
