Ask and you might still not be given

Today my boss who shall not be named here kept out grumbling about idiotic house rules which he claimed that is pivotal to him.


Did I mention that his English sucks big time? It's ridiculously bad and when I say bad, I mean it!


So anyway, he talked about our punctuality and how very bad it was, in fact he repeated very bad at least 5-6 times. Does he not know words like unconscionable or abysmal? Or at least disastrous?


Then he went on to how we should not eat in the office, even for snacks because this is a working place.


Then he moved on to how he got scolded by the big boss for his incompetency. Seriously, the tales of his incompetency bore me. I'm not interested in his ridiculous excuses at all.



For your information, he threatened every single time he highlighted a "house rule". After each rule, he will say that if you guys don't abide, I'm sorry but it's immediate termination with his unflattering Pinoy slant which is downright annoying.


No offence but the last thing you wanna do is to threaten your employees, it will have a huge negative impinge on their trust level towards you and they will eschew from you from that day onwards. A barrier will be set up for sure to fend against you.


As you guys can see, our relationship is rancorous and the animosity between the both of us is just growing day by day. Trust me, one day I will break him, literally.


Then at the end of the day, he asked for suggestions as to how we can improve the systems.


Here comes the point where I was extremely infuriated once again. He never fails to piss me off with his naive questions.


But from that, I learn quite a few things.


Firstly, it doesn't mean that if you ask for suggestions, you will get them. It really depends on the strength of the bond and the relationship between a superior and an employee. Some employees will contribute out of volition while others will be express their penitence, more often than not, in an inconspicuous manner.



Hence, it is instrumental to build that bond with your employee before you ask a favour of them. For your information, suggestions are huge favours to ask for. I cannot emphasis enough how important feedbacks are in today's corporate world. It sets you apart from your competitors!


Secondly, I don't see the point of asking for suggestions randomly at an awkward briefing. I mean, at that point in time, all our minds are blank and we are not superman, we don't remember all the problems we encounter to date. The atmosphere and environment is not even ideal to begin with!


From this point, I learnt that it is of paramount importance to provide the employees with the necessary feedback channel.


We all encounter problems one way or another along the way and we hoped that it will be more convenient for us the next time. When we encounter problems, we got no channel to feedback to, we will simply hold them inside us and then soon we forget about it. This is de facto the vicious cycle in many companies where no one actually bothers to contribute because there is simply no recognition for their efforts.



Other than providing the employees with a convenient channel to feedback the problems they faced at any one point in time, there should also be enticing remunerations awaiting them for every valuable suggestions they contribute.


It must be available to them easily and they should not find it onerous to bring a suggestion across. Otherwise, people will not bother again because it will waste their time and we all hate to waste time.


Yeah, that's what I learn from that incompetent supervisor of mine who has no skill over his command of language as well.


Atrocious is just an understatement! I have more denigrating comments for him but I shall spare you guys from that for now.
